Rhyming with the Bunnies!

I love both the Rhyming Dust Bunnies and The Big Mean Dust Bunny by Jan Thomas. These books bring rhyming to life as the "dust bunnies" carry on a conversation while unknowing being in a dangerous situation.

A word of caution! If your class has ELL students it is harder to explain "dust bunny" than to show what one is. By bringing in an example (either real or a photograph) you are able to save yourself lots of explaining!

I love reading this story to my kindergarten students when they are learning about rhyming and are able to start making connections to other words. There are so many ways to connect with this book! First, students could create their own sequel to the story that their grade 1 buddies could help them write. Then, you could Make Ed, Ned, Ted and Bob and have your students create their own drama skits involving these beloved characters. Finally, creating a 3D  display could act as a reference to this unit and be a visual reminder about different word families and rhyming words.
